9/3/08 - Phil Jones' County side travelled to the top of the table team today, at Ammanford and emerged victorious, having beaten the league leaders, 21-15.
A superb 7-2 win in the first session was what did the damage after which they lost the next 5-4. But the finishing touch was added with a 6-3 win in the third session which left them needing just the one frame in the last - as it was they lost 5-4, but the match finished 21-15 plus the added advantage of three bonus points for the away win.
With the bare nine players travelling today, Phil (pictured right) was forced to play himself, and not only did he acquit himself well, he was nominated the Man of the Match. Congratulations to Phil, and to his team - well done lads! |
|
| 12/2/08 - The County lads slipped to another defeat in their first home match of the season, going down 20-16 to their Cardiff Bluebirds visitors. Mark Borland was the Man of the Match with a 4/4 performance. The Newtown side are still adapting to life in the First Division and, had a couple of frames been taken when chances presented themselves, the match could easily have swung the other way. Unlucky lads! | |
|
20/1/08 - The first
fixture of 2008 ending in a disappointing loss away to Swansea
Blackjacks, 21-15. The first two frames were very close, but the third
frame settled things when Swansea won it 7-2. The Newtown lads pulled back
a little pride by winning the last session, 5-4. Swansea were promoted
from Division Three last season and will be a hard side for anyone to
beat. South Powys also lost their opening match by the same margin.
Man of the Match for North Powys was Glyn Davies with 3/4 wins. |
|
| 6/1/08 - A new year has begun and the fixtures have just been received for the 2008 County Season. We are now in the same league as South Powys A, which is largely made up of Llanbadarn players. Our first fixture is AWAY to Swansea Blackjacks on 13th January. | |
| 11/11/07 - A bad result to the season, although it made no difference to the finishing position. The lads finished in third place despite losing their last game of the year 23-13 to their Cardiff Bluebirds visitors. An 8-1 loss in the first session set the tone for the afternoon and although it improved, they still lost three out of the four sessions. Mike Williams ended the year as the Man of the Match with 3/4 wins. | |
| 21/10/07 - Travelling to Torfaen Rileys, the Newtown lads sustained a 21-15 defeat, despite battling back from 12-6 down to lead 13-12 at one stage. Steve Sherlock was voted Man of the Match, with Mark Borland also commended for his play. This eliminates any hope of promotion this season - unlucky lads. | |
|
9/9/07 - A
disappointing day for the County Team as this was their big chance to
close the gap on the top two, and particularly on Torfaen who were 14
points ahead. Playing bottom of the table Merthyr was an excellent chance
to pile on the points, but all that hope was dashed when they failed to
turn up! This means that Newtown get the same score as the highest on the
day, and that was by Torfaen & we actually lost ground as they had
bonus pts!
The lads are pictured alongside with their new shirts, sponsored by Powys Computer Centre, with additional sponsorship coming from The Lion Hotel and Shilam Restaurant Newtown. (Missing is Richard Evans) |

| 18/8/07 - A diminished squad, with the bare nine players and no Manager, travelled to Carmarthen and did very well to collect a 20-16 victory after trailing 10-8 after two sessions. Richard Evans was easily Man of the Match after winning 4/4 frames. Newtown stay third after the two sides above them also won 20-16 at home. To progress to Division One at the end of the season, Newtown need to target the 15 point gap between them and Torfaen as Port Talbot are a little out of reach. | |
| 8/7/07 - Missed chances were the main story of this home defeat to Port Talbot Blues with the visitors going home 21-15 winners. Six blacks were missed and a black potted at the same time as the cueball, and altogether that could have seen a 22-14 reverse! Mike Williams was awarded the Man of the Match title for his 3/4 performance. Full sheet. | |
| 10/6/07 - A creditable 18-18 draw for Newtown, still in third place because the two teams above them also drew 18-18 today. Man of the Match for Newtown was Mark Borland, who won 3/4 and an excellent performance from Nigel Owen who won 4/4. Just four points separates Newtown from second placed Torfaen Rileys as we reach the half way point in the season. | |
| 4/6/07 - A home fixture against Torfaen Rileys took place at Newtown Football Club on the 13th May which posed a stiff challenge for the Newtown lads as Torfaen were 12 points clear of them in second place. A cracking first session saw Newtown win 7-2, but that did not last as they narrowly lost the next two sessions, but came back to win the last. A 22-16 win saw them creep six points closer to Torfaen, but this month's match (11th June) sees Torfaen pitted away against the top side, Port Talbot Blues, whilst the Newtown lads are away to Cardiff Bluebirds. | |
| 5/3/07 - Newtown's County squad travelled to Merthyr Tydfil to take on their "A" team and found their opposition to consist largely of youngsters who were excellent potters. The Newtown side got off to a flying start, winning the first two sessions by 7-2, before getting a little over-confident and losing the third session 5-4. They went onto win the last session, finishing with a 24-12 victory. Drew Hughes was voted Man of the Match, as he was one of several players who only lost one frame, finishing with 3/4. | |
| 12/2/07 - In their first home match of the season, it was back to successful ways for the North Powys side. They entertained Carmarthen "B" at Newtown Football Club and after winning the first two sessions by convincing 7-2 margins, they lost the last two, narrowly, 5-4. That still gave them an excellent 22-14 victory which was against the side that gained promotion alongside them last season. Mark Borland was voted Man of the Match for three good clearances in his 3/4 performance. The next match is on 4th March away to Merthyr A. | |
| 14/1/07 - Newtown's first match of the season was away to Port Talbot, but Phil's lads came up against the Division Two favourites, without any question as Port Talbot had put together a side blessed with several Welsh Internationals and they notched up a win 23-13. Johnny Jerman was voted Man of the Match with a 2/4 performance. | |
